Strategic Decision Making

With Prof. Dr. Mihael A Jeklic (King’s College London)

Overview

This module offers an interdisciplinary overview of decision-making, highlighting how recent advances in cognitive psychology influence judgment and choice. It combines theoretical discussions with cognitive and interpersonal exercises and applied simulation cases to give students both a solid understanding and practical experience. Key topics include decision analysis and game theory for evaluating uncertainty and strategic interaction, the dual process theory explaining human judgment, and cognitive-behavioral models such as heuristics, bounded awareness, and prospect theory.

Key topics:

  • Decision analysis and probabilistic thinking
  • Strategic interactions through game theory
  • Dual process theory: fast vs slow thinking
  • Cognitive biases and debiasing strategies
  • Bounded awareness and rationality
  • Prospect theory and reversal of preferences.

After this course you will be able to:

  • Develop a working knowledge of probabilistic modeling (decision analysis) relevant to legal and business contexts, enabling you to analyze decision problems of intermediate complexity.
  • Understand behavioral decision research, particularly in relation to judgment and common errors in decision-making processes.
  • Critically examine and assess both your own and others’ decision-making processes, identifying biases and judgmental errors.
  • Apply the acquired knowledge flexibly and creatively in unfamiliar situations, synthesizing ideas and information to generate innovative and transformative solutions.
  • Use personal reflection to analyze your actions in light of the descriptive theory presented.
